Mathilde, She Is Not Wrong

Mathilde, If She Were in This Age…

Provided Mathilde were in this age, what would happen to her?

The comments of the story say, “She is one of those pretty and charming girls who are sometimes, as if by a mistake of destiny, born in a family of clerks.”

Yes, it was really a mistake of destiny in late nineteenth-century. At that time, French society was organized on a class basis. It was extremely difficult for people to change or move from the class into which they were born. It is exactly the settings of the story The Necklace, which features Mathilde.

She is a sacrifice of that society. She has no dowry, and no means of being known. Women nowadays can make a difference through diligence and intelligence; they can win respect because of wisdom and knowledge, can ask for right of education, of independence and of equality with men. Women’s fate is taken the reins by themselves but not in the control of the men or the destiny.

She is pretty, charming and elegant; she is hard-working and keeps promise. She has ambitions and dreams to lead a decent and luxurious life. So, what would happen to her if she lived in the twenty-first century?

Let us turn our attention to another woman, Hilary. She, of elegance and beauty, with ambitions and wisdom, keep working diligently no matter when she was in law school, or when she acted as a senate or when she acted as a senate. She campaigned for becoming the new President of the United States, the first woman President in the history! Actually, Mathilde, in my mind, has a lot of similar strong points and as Hilary, Rice and Royal. If she were in this age, maybe she would be one of the women candidates for the presidency in some country. At least, she could choose her way of life and steer her boat in a direction she prefers.

Mathilde, Only Does What Everyone Might Do!

Please do not blame this woman. She is not wrong but the society in late nineteenth-century was. She was a good woman, keeping promise, hard-working, beautiful and even elegant.

Many readers could refer to vanity after reading "The Necklace". Yes, it was what I thought of the first time I read this story. Nonetheless, now, I maintain that Mathilde only does what everyone is doing, pursuing an ideal perfect life with unceasing desires. Do you agree with me?

Suppose beauty, charm, grace have nothing to do with her; however she was born with a silver spoon, then what might she pursue? It could be a plain life with an ordinary husband, but adoring her, willing to share her happiness and sadness, responsible to assume life burdens, and courageous to take risks, bear both ups and downs for her.

Reflect on yourself, please! Everyone is desirable to attain as much as possible, pursues the betterment of life, and always neglect what he or she has possessed.

Truly speaking, Mathilde, with good looks, an ordinary family, stable though not quite decent life, had possessed a lot. Vanity, simply explaining, is an unceasing desire to be known and recognized, which in the end can not bring people comfort of life or peace of mind. It is a human weakness, which everyone has possession of, unconsciously or subconsciously.

She Is Not Wrong, Neither Are We!

Haven’t you ever asked for more? Haven't you desired to be recognized or known by people around? Haven’t you been on top of the world when applause, exclamation, and praise are all around?

At least, my answers to these three questions are all “Yes”!

Be satisfied with your present status; ask for not so much; treasure what we have already possessed. Follow these three steps, and you can enjoy every minute of life. If Mathilde followed the steps, she would not suffer such a big and dramatic ridicule.

However, according to today's criteria for talents, to be desirable, aggressive and ambitious is a quality worth appreciating. Just as Pepsi says, "Ask for More!" So, if you keep pursuing wealth, power, recognition——the so-called vanity, go ahead!
